Day 21

Week 3, Day 21: Breakthrough to Align With God’s Plans and Purposes: “Not my will but your will be done.”

Luke 22:42

"Father, if you are willing, take this cup from me; yet not my will, but yours be done."

When most of us think about breakthrough, we immediately think about God changing something around us. We pray for breakthrough in our finances, our health, our relationships, our careers, or our circumstances. And there's nothing wrong with those prayers. Scripture is filled with stories of a God who heals, delivers, provides, and performs miracles.

But what if the greatest breakthrough God wants to bring first isn't around us—but within us?

One of the most powerful moments in all of Scripture happens in a garden. Jesus, fully aware of the suffering that lay ahead, falls to His knees in prayer. He doesn't pretend the pain isn't real. He doesn't hide His emotions. He honestly tells the Father, "If there is another way..."

Then comes one of the most transformative prayers ever prayed:

"Yet not my will, but yours be done."

That wasn't resignation. It was surrender.

Sometimes we think surrender means giving up. In God's Kingdom, surrender is actually how we move forward. It's how our hearts become aligned with His. It's how our desires are reshaped by His desires. It's how we discover that God's plans are always better than our own—even when they take us somewhere we never expected.

Fasting has a unique way of exposing what competes for first place in our hearts. As we intentionally say "no" to something good, we're creating space to say "yes" to someone greater. We slow down long enough to ask not simply, "God, what do I want from You?" but "God, what do You want for me?"

There's a significant difference.

Many of us come into seasons of prayer asking God to bless our plans. But breakthrough often begins when we ask Him to reveal His plans instead.

Throughout Scripture, God rarely invited people into lives of comfort. He invited them into lives of purpose.

Abraham left everything familiar.

Moses returned to Egypt.

Esther risked her life.

Peter stepped out of the boat.

Paul changed the course of his entire life after encountering Jesus.

None of them found breakthrough because they stayed in control. They found it because they surrendered control.

I've discovered this in my own life as well. Looking back, some of the moments I once viewed as interruptions were actually invitations. God wasn't preventing my purpose—He was preparing me for it. There were seasons when I desperately wanted Him to change my circumstances, but instead He chose to transform my heart. At the time, it felt disappointing. Today, I see it was one of His greatest gifts.

Spiritual maturity isn't simply learning more about God. It's learning to trust Him enough to place our lives fully in His hands.

During this fast, maybe the question isn't, "God, will You change my situation?"

Maybe the greater question is, "God, what are You trying to change in me?"

Because sometimes the breakthrough you've been praying for begins with the surrender you've been avoiding.

As we align our hearts with God's purposes, we often discover something remarkable: His will isn't something to fear, it's the safest place we could ever be. His plans are always rooted in His goodness, His wisdom, and His love. When we release our grip on our own agenda, we make room for Him to accomplish far more than we could have imagined.

Today, before asking God to move mountains around you, invite Him to shape the heart within you. That's often where breakthrough begins.

Listening Prayer:Holy Spirit, where am I asking You to bless my plans instead of seeking Yours? What area of my life are You inviting me to surrender so I can experience the breakthrough You desire?

Prayer: Father, thank You that Your plans are always better than mine, even when I don't fully understand them. Forgive me for the times I've clung tightly to my own agenda instead of trusting Your heart. During this fast, align my desires with Yours. Give me the courage to surrender what I've been holding onto and the faith to follow wherever You lead. Help me become more concerned with Your purposes than my preferences. May my life reflect the prayer of Jesus: "Not my will, but Yours be done." In Jesus' name, Amen.

Proverbs 3:5-6

"Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways submit to him, and he will make your paths straight."

Romans 12:1-2

"Therefore, I urge you, brothers and sisters, in view of God's mercy, to offer your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and pleasing to God—this is your true and proper worship. Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God's will is—his good, pleasing and perfect will."
