Day 25

Week 4, Day 25: Trusting in God’s Timing for Our Breakthrough

Psalm 27:13-14

“I believe that I shall look upon the goodness of the Lord in the land of the living! Wait for the Lord; Be strong, and let your heart take courage; Wait for the Lord!”

No one enjoys being around an impatient person. Whether it’s in the checkout line, driving on the freeway, or waiting at the dinner table, we all experience the heaviness that impatience can bring. For the most part, we aren’t taught to be impatient; it comes pretty naturally. However, waiting well is a skill that must be learned intentionally. And when we commit ourselves to learning that skill, our understanding of God’s timing—and our hope for breakthrough—can grow.

Thankfully, we have examples throughout Scripture of what trusting God’s timing looks like. The Holy Spirit also lives within us, making our everyday circumstances perfect training grounds for learning patience and trusting God’s timing. When I think of someone who waited well, King David is one of the first people who comes to mind.

Psalm 27 walks us through a beautiful picture of David’s trust in the Lord’s timing. Although we don’t know the specific circumstances surrounding the writing of this psalm, we do know that David was familiar with waiting. Approximately 15 years passed between David’s anointing as king and the day he sat on the throne. David also spent long periods of time on the run in the wilderness.

Reading Psalm 27 with David’s life in mind, we can see that David held fast to who he knew God to be and trusted what that meant for the breakthrough he was waiting for.

The psalm begins with David highlighting the incredible character of God. He says that the Lord is his light and salvation, and that he has no reason to fear (Psalm 27:1). Because of the ways God had moved in his life, David writes that what mattered most to him was spending his life in the house of the Lord (Psalm 27:4). Even in the midst of struggle, David’s greatest desire was to proclaim the goodness of God and dwell in His house forever.

Then David pivots to emphasize all that he knows God will do. Verses 5–14 are filled with language pointing toward the future, revealing David’s expectant heart. He knows who God is, and he trusts that God will remain faithful.

The final verses of the psalm are an encouragement to readers like us:

“I believe that I shall look upon the goodness of the Lord in the land of the living! Wait for the Lord; be strong, and let your heart take courage; wait for the Lord!”

All of David’s previous words hinge on this: Wait for the Lord.

He is not finished.

David boldly proclaims that he believes he will see the goodness of God “in the land of the living.” His hope is not only for what happens after we die; he believes God’s goodness can be experienced here, in our lives and circumstances today.

I love this psalm because it handles the tension of the “right now” and “not yet” so well. David knew who God was, and because he knew God, he could trust His timing. David wouldn’t have written about God hiding him in His shelter and taking care of him if everything were fine and dandy. David was in need of breakthrough. He was waiting, just like you and me.

And that is where trusting God’s timing becomes so important. When we are waiting for breakthrough, it can be easy to become impatient, discouraged, or tempted to take matters into our own hands. But David shows us another way. We can wait with confidence—not because we know exactly when the breakthrough will come, but because we know the One who holds our future.

I don’t know what breakthrough you are waiting for. I don’t know the conversations, the prayer walks, the appointments, or the tears you’ve cried. But I do know that the God we serve is the same God David wrote about. The same God who provided for and carried David is the God who will provide for and carry you.

David was able to write those beautiful words and display such a deep measure of trust in God because he knew God’s character. He knew that God draws near to the brokenhearted. He knew that God is a good Father. He knew that God was faithful, even when he couldn’t see how or when the breakthrough would come.

So why would we doubt God’s timing when He is the One who bottles our tears, hears our prayers, and goes before us? He knows our waiting better than anyone.

Trusting God’s timing does not mean that we stop believing for breakthrough. It means that we stop believing that we have to control when or how it comes. God alone brings breakthrough. Our responsibility is to place our trust in His good character, remain faithful in the waiting, and believe that He is still working—even when we cannot yet see it.

No matter how difficult the waiting may be, it is always worth learning how to wait well and place our trust in God’s timing. Because when we know who God is, we can trust that His timing is good. And when we trust His timing, we can wait with courage, hope, and confidence that we will see His goodness in the land of the living.

Listening Prayer:

Holy Spirit, where have I misplaced my trust for breakthrough? In what areas are you calling me to wait well and trust Your timing?

Prayer:

Father God, thank you for your timing. Thank you for your patience with me as I learn to trust you. Thank you for revealing to me that I cannot do it on my own, and that my timeline is flawed. Give me the eyes to see where you are moving. Give me the patience to wait well and stand firm. Remind me of the truth when doubt creeps in. I surrender my timelines, my plans, my agendas, and trust that you have good in store for me. I love you. In Jesus name. Amen!

Isaiah 40:29-31

“He gives power to the faith, and to him who has no might he increases strength. Even youths shall faint and be weary, and young men shall fall exhausted; but they who wait for the LORD shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings like eagles; they shall run and not be weary; they shall walk and not faint.”

Psalm 130:5

“I wait for the Lord, my whole being waits, and in His word I put my hope.”
