The Lord's Prayer - Ep 4

Today and every Thursday during this summer series, we practice a modified form of Lectio Divina, which means sacred reading. Lectio Divina is an ancient practice that helps us slow down, listen to God's voice, and allow scripture to shape our hearts. This week, we reflect on the simple prayer, forgive us our debts.

Before we begin, let's take a moment to quiet ourselves before the Lord. Ask Him to help you be honest with yourself and Him today. When Jesus teaches us to pray, forgive us our debts, He reminds us that forgiveness is at the center of our relationship with God.

God is not surprised by our failures. He already knows our weaknesses and invites us to bring them to Him so that we can experience the freedom that comes from honesty and grace. In the silence today that follows the reading of the prayer, take a moment to tell Him specifically and honestly where you've fallen short this week.

our failures, justify our behavior, or convince ourselves we're doing better than we really are. Yet Jesus invites us into a daily rhythm of honesty, confession, and forgiveness. This is not meant to produce shame.

Instead, it creates a posture of dependence. Every time we come to God and acknowledge our need, we are reminded that His grace is sufficient and His mercy is new every morning. As you listen to the Lord's prayer again, notice any resistance, defensiveness, or shame that sneaks into your honesty before God.

Ask Him to teach you to confess more easily and receive His forgiveness more fully. Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name. Your kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as it is in heaven.

Give us this day our daily bread, and forgive us our debts, as we also have forgiven our debtors. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. Father, thank you that you already know us completely, and yet you still invite us to come to you.

Thank you that through Jesus, we don't have to hide our failures, justify our behavior, or pretend that we have it all together. Teach us to be honest with you. Give us the humility to acknowledge where we have fallen, and the faith to receive the forgiveness that you freely offer.

Help us keep short accounts with you, bringing our sin into the light and trusting your grace again and again and again. Protect us from both shame and pride. Remind us that your mercy is new every morning, and that your love for us is unending.

Teach us to walk closely with you, depending on your grace, each day. In the name of Jesus. Amen.
