: Breaking Agreement with the Enemy and Making Agreement with God

Scripture:

2 Corinthians 10:5

Casting down arguments and every high thing that exalts itself against the knowledge of God, bringing every thought into captivity to the obedience of Christ

“You will be like God,” they heard the serpent say. And suddenly Adam and Eve had the certainty that there was something better for them. They believed there was something they could eat that would make them be like God. But here’s the heartbreaking fact, they already were like HIm. The enemy convinced them they were missing something they already had! The first chapter of Genesis explains to us how God made them in His image, having dominion over all the earth. They were already like God, but the moment they agreed with the serpent, they believed God was holding out on them, and they acted on that belief. And just like that, the enemy started a career in manipulating the children of God into agreeing with his lies.

The enemy often uses the pain and trauma in our lives, many times since childhood, to lie to us and get us to agree with his lie. The parents’ divorce, the abuse, or the betrayal can become “I’m unlovable,” “ I’m never safe,” “ I’m not worthy”. The power of the lie is that we believe it to be true, and we see our lives through the lens of that lie. Because we don’t believe we are at war, we’re completely unaware we’re under attack. And yet….

Church, I have really good news! Truth is our weapon, it is our sword. Truth is what Jesus used against the enemy when he tried to lie to Him in the desert. “It is written”, he would answer to every agreement the enemy tried to make. He not only defeated the enemy but also gave us the weapons to defeat him.  He promised us his Holy Spirit, “who will guide us into all truth” (John 16:13).

He promised us that we would “know the truth, and the truth [would] set us free” (John 8:32).

The Holy Spirit is our comforter and our teacher. He loves to heal us in all the places we’ve been hurt. He gently reveals to us the lies we’ve believed and frees us with His precious truth.

Freedom is available to us through the blood of Jesus, and it is really simple. We can break agreement with the enemy by agreeing with the truth He has spoken over us. Every lie the enemy has told you, Jesus has already redeemed, Jesus has already spoken the truth about that lie you’ve believed, and He’s revealed it to you in His love letter to you, His word.

Listening Prayer: Invite the Holy Spirit into the places of pain in your life where you were vulnerable to agreements. Ask the Holy Spirit to reveal any agreements you may have made. Partner with the Holy Spirit as you seek His truth in His word and listen to Him as He speaks truth over you. Break agreement with the enemy and agree with the lover of your soul!

Prayer: Father, I thank you that you don’t leave us as victims, you don’t leave us as orphans. I thank you for the freedom that is available to me. Thank you for your mercy, thank you for your grace, thank you for your love. You’ve made me an heir, and you’ve given me power, love, and a sound mind. Thank you for revealing the truth to me. That the lies I’ve agreed with are just that, lies. And the blood of Jesus is speaking better things!
