“So, whether you eat or drink, or whatever you do, do all to the glory of God.” (1 Corinthians 10:31;emphasis added)

There’s that word all again. That word where God is calling us to be all in, in yet another area of our life. He loves us so much and wants every part of us in communion with him. We think of worship as time set apart to love on him. A time singing to him, reading his word, communing with him in nature. A few days ago when we asked the Lord to help us to explore new ways to engage in worship, I’m not sure many of us thought of the mundane everyday life things like taking out the trash, doing the dishes, or laundry. He wants to be in and a part of everything. So if he is there, in the ordinary and commonplace, it is another opportunity to worship him.

A while back, someone I loved had fallen ill and was in the hospital. They had not shared how bad things had become, and their house was in desperate need of cleaning. My husband and I went to their house to help get things back into a more livable state. I was overwhelmed with the task at hand and frustrated that things were so out of control. As I was on my hands and knees scrubbing the bathroom floor, I heard the Lord whisper to me, “This is an act of worship.” I repented of my bad attitude and began to praise the Lord, in the midst of the filth and mess, knowing that I was not just doing this for my loved one, I was doing this for him. Sometimes, worship is a heart posture of extending the love of God to someone who needs a touch from him.

Worship is a lifestyle. Everything we do has the possibility of bringing glory to the Lord. When we operate in the name of the Lord, our jobs, how we treat our families, how we engage with strangers, how we drive, when we respond in love to those who wrong us, when we give sacrificially to those in need, even scrubbing toilets, all of it is an act of worship because we are responding from the Father’s love. We are being an extension of who he is to the world around us. Living a worshipful life is filling ourselves to overflowing with the love of God and pouring it out into everything we do.

Listening Prayer:

Holy Spirit, reveal to me the areas in my life where I am not living out a lifestyle of worship. Repent and ask him to teach you a new way.

Prayer:

Father God, I want to live a more worshipful life. I invite you, Holy Spirit, into everything I do. Correct me, teach me, and train me to do everything as if I were doing it for you. May my heart be filled with thanksgiving and worship as we do the ordinary and the extraordinary together. May my life be a living expression of worship that brings glory to your name. In Jesus’ name, Amen.

“You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your might.” (Deuteronomy 6:5)

“Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly, teaching and admonishing one another in all wisdom, singing psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, with thankfulness in your hearts to God. And whatever you do, in word or deed, do everything in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through him.” (Colossians 3:16-17)

“Through him then let us continually offer up a sacrifice of praise to God, that is, the fruit of lips that acknowledge his name. Do not neglect to do good and to share what you have, for such sacrifices are pleasing to God.” (Hebrews 13:15-16)“I will bless the Lord at all times; his praise shall continually be in my mouth. My soul makes its boast in the Lord; let the humble hear and be glad. Oh, magnify the Lord with me, and let us exalt his name together!” (Psalm 34:1-3)
